What would you charge?

This question is directed more to those that are pro's at this stuff .

As with alot of my thoughts on this projects, I was wondering if someone came to you and said they wanted a custom built wall hanging cabinet, what would you charge for it? Assume that it is made from Cherry and your materiel cost are in that $150-200 range and the size is the same as the one built in the guild.

I was figuring that about $600-700 would be a reasonable price. Maybe $800-1000 when you get into fancier woods. What do you guys think?

I know that everyone's pricing is different and everyone has their own math to come to the total, so speaking in general, is $600 crazy cheap and $1000 be the low end for custom work? Just wanted to know people thoughts on this

Thanks!

Walnut for the case and Claro walnut for the door panels and drawer front. Thanks for checking it out!

Completed Wall Hanging Cabinet

This is my version of the winter's guild build wall hanging cabinet. I decided to keep the same dimensions but rotate it 90 deg which fits our bathroom a little better.

I went with walnut for the the main construction along with walnut veneer ply for the doors and stained ply for the back. I used a leigh jig to cut the dovetails for both the case and drawers. The finish was 3 coats of a satin wiping varnish.

The cabinet has been in our bathroom for about a month now and one of the drawers has swelled to the point where it can't be pushed in all the way... time to get the block plane out!!

Like most projects, there are always surprises, and this one was no exception. I purchased some nice figured veneer for the doors, but it was extremely waving. In my first attempt ever to flatten very waving veneer I used a recipe I found online that uses some glue. Clamped it all up, but I forgot the step to add some mesh in between the paper and veneer. You can guess what happened... I had nice paper veneer with a walnut core! Plan B ended up purchasing flatter veneer.

Finally had a chance to make an early morning (pre-work) run for lumber this morning. Met the Amish guys at Yoder Lumber as they came in for work at 6am this morning. Found some great Cherry boards.

2 of them are about 10.5" wide and one is about 8.5". Trying to decide if I'll stick to the plan dimensions and see if I can get my rails and stiles out of the body off-cuts, or if I'll just add about 2" of depth.
The wife decided that we didn't really have a need for a bathroom cabinet in either of our bathrooms so this will probably hang next to my drill press in the shop and store bits etc....

Plywood WHC

So i've finally started the WHC. I had planned to build along in real time, but wasn't able to. I'm going with the Plywood version, mainly because i've not really used plywood for any "real" projects before. I'm using mahogany plywood, I had wanted to go walnut by my wood store was out and he gave me a great deal on the mahogany.

This will be living in a bathroom which really doesn't get much use. We have a bathroom in our basement which has a shower but in the year we've lived here it's never been used, so i'm not concerned with mold and moisture. We don't have much room for hand towels or TP storage, so this will come in very handy.so I'm thinking of going with BLO or just a wipe on poly. Any suggestions as to which i should use?

I've completed the case construction and am just about to start prefinishing. I was really tempted to complete the build and then finish, but reading Marc's book has given me (at least temporarily:) enough patience to look at the finish as part of the buiding process, rather than something i need to rush through at the end.

My Wall Hanging Cabinet

Well... looks like I finished just in time for the Adirondack Chair build... and mother's day.

This is a major milestone for me. I got into woodworking years ago with the intention of building furniture. It's been a slow process until the last 6 months ago when I dove in head first. Now here I am with my first completed piece of furniture.

Is it perfectly square? No.
Are the dovetails flawless? No.
Is the finish super even? No.

However, the post mortem can wait for another post. Right now... just look at it. It's a real, functional, fine piece of furniture.

Being the first piece of this complexity, I kept pretty close to the design and build process as Marc outlined in his videos. It's almost entirely cherry, which was pretty nice to work with. I tried to make the carcass so that it was lined with sap wood from the front. This worked pretty well though there are places where heart wood is showing. We'll see how that ages. The handles are made from walnut and cut trapezoidal to match the angle of the dovetails. The door panels are bookmatched and were my first real experiment in re-sawing. The bottom of the drawer is made from some 1/4" bambo ply I had laying around. I pre treated with Charles Neal's pre-stain conditioner and finished with General Finishes' Seal-A-Cell

I'm giving it to my mother tomorrow for mother's day. I can't wait.

Finished the WHC!

OK. After running into a BUTT LOAD of issues with this cabinet, I have finally reached the end. The only thing that I still lack is the inside latches for the doors and the French cleat to hang it. I actually bought the latches for the inside, but some how I have lost them in the shop, so I will buy two more (then get home and find the two that I lost). So, if the doors look like they are not quite flush with the front, it is because the doors are not completely shut. I apologize for the crappy pictures, but my cell phone is all that I had available tonight. After I hang it on the wall, I will get my good camera and take some nicer pictures.

I welcome everyone’s comments, critics and questions. Please keep a few things in mind. Below is a list of the first with this project.

1. First piece of furniture
2. First time to use dyes.
3. First time to make dovetails.
4. First time to make a drawer.
5. First time to make a stile and rail cabinet door.

and probably several other firsts that I can not think of.

I will tell you that I was pretty disappointed after putting the dye on it, when I realized that my dovetails could barely be seen.

Anyway........enough excuses. Let me know what I can do to improve the next one.

Again, if you can not see anything very well, I will get better pictures for the guild gallery soon.

PS: You will notice that I recessed the entire thing by a 1/4", instead of it being flush like the plan.

Thanks,
Jeff

I'm way behind on the wall cabinet build, so I'm just now looking at getting the material for the back of the cabinet.

The cabinet is made out of blue stained pine (bunch of images here: http://www.google.com/search?q=blue+stained+pine&hl=en&prmd=ivns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=PsDCTZryJ6eC0QGF0sTuAw&ved=0CEIQsAQ&biw=1207&bih=679 )

There's no plywood I can get for the back, so I'll need to do something else. I can just go with any random plywood and it would probably be fine, but I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas. I suppose I could plain some wood down down 1/4" and slide it in the back, but I don't think that would quite have the desired effect.

Any thoughts on a good match?

Iam about ready to start finishing my wall hanging cabinet. I am using GeneralFinishes - Ebony Dye. After applying this to a sample piece, I have noticedthat the pores of the Red Oak show up like a NEON SIGN. This is due to the dye,not being able to get into the deep pores. Even after several coats, the dye isnot going to penetrate. So, I have heard that on woods such as Red Oak andMahogany, it is sometimes needed to use grain filler. I have never used fillerbefore, but I can see why people use it on Red Oak. Even after sanding the HECKout of this cabinet, I can still fill every pore on the wood. After thisproject, I will probably stay away from Red Oak in the future for this reason.Anyway, is grain filler pretty much my only option here? Also, is the fillergoing to interfere with the dye?
Also:Is there something that I am doing to cause the wood to open the pores morethan it should be?

When is the Deadline?

When is the dead line for getting the Wall Hanging Cabnet photos in for the Festol Contest, or is it already past? I have not seen very many photos of the cabinet, and thought that there may still be time to get it finished. Thanks for your help.
