Benchcraft Discount

Hello. I'm considering joining the Guild and I'm crunching some of the numbers.

I have two quick questions:

Does the discount from Benchcraft expire?

What is the discount amount?

Thanks!

Need a bench!

I've been thinking for a few months now about pulling the trigger on a guild membership, but I have been meaning to build my bench first. I've read most of "Workbenches" by Christopher Shwarz over the past few weeks to get my creative juices going. Then I go onto the website and see lo-and-behold that the next project is a Benchcrafted Split-Top Roubo Workbench. WOOT! That bench fits all my criteria for a really great bench. I only have one problem.. cost

The site mentions the hardware will be discounted but not by how much. I want to get started on my bench now, but if the hardware is truly a reasonable price (and I would say the benchcrafted.com prices are rather unreasonable) I would definitely wait and become a guild member. I know, I have to pay the price to get the quality, but just like everyone else I know that every dollar I spend on my bench is a dollar less I can spend on my next project.. sigh.. Anyway, any word on the price for the hardware?

several questions

Ok, I have several questions about the guild that I really feel I should already know the answer to but I'm just uncertain. I consider myself to be a begginer and everything has been self taught, some by books, some by the internet and some by expensive mistakes so the idea of a "school" is really intriguing. However, before I lay down the dough I wanna know what I'm getting into. So here goes.

1. Do I understand correctly that the information is NOT presented in a " if you want to know this you'll be here Friday at 8:13 am" kinda way but rather it's archived so I can go get it at my liesure, over and over, if needed to get it through my thick skull?

2. This is the question I really really should know but I just don't. Can someone please explain in plain english what is a podcast and how does it work?(by how it works I mean how do I view/listen/download etc not the ins and outs of computer code )

3. When you say you recieve a "packet" prior to each build is that in the form of email, snail mail or do I download it from the site?

I suppose that's all the questions. Thank you all for your help and thank you Marc for putting the plethera (sp?) of info you've put out.

Resources for basic techniques

Hi all,

I have just joined the Guild and am rather new to wood working.

I am wondering if there is a good clear resource that us newbies can use to learn the most basic of techniques?

As an example I am trying to understand how to do the following

The hand plan (what is it for and when should I use it?)

To plan vs. sand. I have built the “end grain” cutting board and would like to know what technique to use for the best finish.

How best to laminate a surface? I have built a desk (the Kreg student desk) and would like to better protect the top from the damage a teenager will cause.

My hope would be that there is a common resource I can review so I do not overwhelm the forum with embarrassing questions.

Thanks

Guild vs. classroom

I'd like to join the guild but at the same time I'm saving for classroom instruction - probably John C. Campbell in NC.
I wonder which is a better investment. If any members have been to a classroom environment and also have finished a project with the guild please take a minute and compare the two for me.

Thanks in advance,

Guild Gear and the Guild Store

Marc

Any time frame on when you will be getting Guild specific gear out and available (with that elusive new Guild logo)? Will there be a separate "Guild Store"? Inquiring minds want to know.

Cheers

Machines required for Guild Builds

Hi all,
I am a new woodworker and am very interested in joining the guild. Being a new woodworker I don't have the full compliment of tools yet. What would be a recommended tools needed to complete most of the guild builds. Specifically do you need a planer and jointer? I have a table saw, bandsaw, router w/table and drill press, as well as some smaller power tools (drills, sanders etc). Also what hand tools are required? I would like to join, but if I need more tools, I can wait until I purchase those. I apologize if this list is somewhere on the site, I looked but couldn't find anything. Thanks!
