What came first the jointer or the planer?

I think I know the answer to this question already. I know ideally they work as a team, but if you had to chose which one would you purchase first.

You'll find several threads on this, but the answer is to first buy a planer, as you can use a sled to "joint" one face then plane it. But, if you have both, you joint a face then plane the other side.

If that’s the case, then a 12-13 inch planer sounds like good economy. A 12-13 inch planer plus, functionally, a 12-13 inch jointer using a sled.

For sure the planer. Like Beechwood said you can use a Router Table, Table Saw or Sled. Jointers are great, but easier to sub for.

Also, people were creating fine furniture long before power planers and jointers. You could always buy a few planes and learn some skills and do it that way.
