rippitupp
I am in the process of constructing a Torsion Box using Marc's design from episode 18. Is it acceptable to stagger the cross bracing of the "honeycomb" by half the distance of the previous row to make toe nailing easier? Will this effect the end product? davestanton
It is possible to stagger, but not to the extent you mention. Try to have a continual line and fit the cross members either side of the line. This will ensure a continuity of pressure as there is no flexing possible. Hope this helps. thewoodwhisperer
Good question....I guess I'll find out soon since that's what I did on my new torsion box. I found it much easier as well and couldn't see a good reason not to do it. I suppose having the parts perfectly in line would add some strength, but with all the ribs glued to the skins, I just can't see how it makes all that much of a difference. And being able to drive the brads in head on makes things significantly easier. And keep in mind that we rarely test the true strength of a torsion box since most of us put it on a base providing 100% support. So losing some strength, in my estimation, doesn't have much impact.
Texfire
I would think the strength of a torsion box is secondary to it's rigidity as long as you don't exceed the first.
rippitupp
Thanks for the info guys! Just finished building the table. I ended up having to stagger the joints due to the relatively small size of the table. I haven't quite figured out how to make the Wife park her car outside in the snow, so i can have the garage for my shop. LOL. davestanton
If the wife is happy, you are happy is a statement that runs true, not just because it rhythms, but because it is true! When you say you stagered the joints, was it mid point or either side of centre line?
