rmac
I've heard that you can do that with plain old PVA glue. Never tried it, though. -- Russ
Mark Reuten
Russ is right. I've tried it and it works just fine. Probably best to coat both surfaces if possible. An old heavier iron will do the job better than a modern lightweight model. White glue; carpenters glue; Tightbond I or II or III. They should all work fine. rmac
Mark, any idea how thick the veneer can be and still have this work? At some point, it seems like thicker veneer would keep the heat of the iron from reaching the glue. -- Russ

Basically you coat both surfaces with white glue and let it dry. Then apply the heat with an iron as long as the heat get to both glued surfaces you're fine. I'd think you could up to 1/16" or even 1/8" but most commercially made veneer is thinner than that. I've done this with a number of veneers I've bought and never had a problem. Unless you're making your own veneers on a band saw I'd think this would work fine for most.
rmac
Andrew, Yeah, what I was getting at was shop made veneer that would be a lot thicker than store bought. Guess I'll just have to try it and find out! -- Russ
duckkisser
i tried it with tightbond white glue and wood glue didnt work as well as the stuff that you buy at the store tried a dozen different samples and it does not stick in a few areas no matter what i do
dwacker
Not sure why you want hot melt. Regular TB and clamps works fine for small pieces. If your looking for a fast bond then you can always go with hide glue. Don
