Cutting Board

Hi,

I'm totally new to making a wood projects and have decided to start with a cutting board. I have found a pic of a great looking cutting board that I'd like to make for my wife for our 15th anniversary. I have seen the price of wood pieces and with those pricing I do not want to make any mistakes. My thinking is that this board is made with one piece of wood ( not sure what kind, but I think maple would work best here), the groves are either cut with a router or rotozipper (I have access to both) and than stained. When it comes to staining I was thinking of taping the lighter part of wood to protect it, but since I'm new at this, I'm not sure if the stain will not bleed thru anyway. Plus it seems that the groves are filled with some black stain/paint.

Any advice or suggestions would be very welcomed.

if you like you can take a wood like cherry and ebonize it to get your picture made. it is easy and it might work out to be better. you wont have do any routing just ebonize the outside lines and stain the inside areas.
