ryandetzel
A friend gave me this, it's heavy as hell and works pretty well but it has no makers on it. Because of it's weight and size it looks expensive but I have no idea. I plan on building a workbench soon and I'll need one of these(I think) so is this a good one to use? How can I tell? Limbojim
Thats the kind of vise you would use for a drill press. Kind of a machinists. I don't think you would want this on a workbench.
Onboard
Ryan, that’s a cross sliding vise. As Jim indicated, it really isn’t for woodworking per say. If you want you can do a Google image search on “cross sliding vise” or sometimes “cross slide vise”. Grizzly sells a 3” for $48.95 and a 4” for $62.95. There are bigger ones out there. Harbor Freight sells a 6” for $99.99 (okay, $100).
TimV
+1 on this is a machinist vise for a drill press. You would lose much of the usefullness of that vise if you mount it to your bench. I would recommend that you keep it for a drill press and get a different vise for your bench.
