More simple projects - one function, several designs

Another simple project, though this one is very popular indeed. Still I will leave you all guessing for a little while...

Each one (there are more to follow) has the same function, I just let rip with some wild ideas... Couldn't reproduce them if I wanted, so they're all different.

1. "Cantilever":

2. "Gondola" - some imagination required...

3. "Diesis"

4. "Wedge"

I had a great time making them, and the others are underway. I'm using boiled linseed oil followed by shellac (2lb cut), but only Cantilever has received a first coat of shellac. Runs and stains everywhere :(

Shellac seems to be like painting with strong tea, and I'm struggling to get even coats. Using an artists flat brush, about 20mm in width. After two coats I'll smooth with four aught steel wool, but not sure how to get the last coat smooth - any tips greatly appreciated.

spray gun maybe might need to thin it down i realy like the shape of the cantilever. I have a few friends who are more modern in their desighns they would probably like that shape depending on what its used for................my guess it is used for eather a candy dish or a cutting board. hard to tell since we cant see the top to know if it is scooped out.

The shellac is soooo thin already, even though it's a 2lb cut - but please remember this is my first attempt with the stuff.

You can't see the top because that would be the give-away - which probably helps a bit.

I didn't put my hand in the photos this time, because apparently that doesn't help much :D

are they fancy pet feeding bowls ? inside /tops scooped out ? and you are giving them as gifts ?

try 4000 grit sandpaper- auto supply store to smooth out finish

No, not pet feeding bowls. Interesting idea though.

I've smoothed with four aught steel wool, and dropped to a 1 lb cut of shellac. Still getting stains though, a run where the shellac builds up. Doesn't seem to have redissolved either after applying the 1 lb cut. Hmm.

Candle holders?

And the winner is ... MikeD

It's clear that those are the lost keys to solve the riddle of the Christmas donkey!

Very cryptic, unless you've played the video on the other thread. Not a riddle solver though, sorry.

Sushi platters?

Excellent idea. Sushi isn't that popular here, also quite expensive (take-away or restaurant), perhaps I should pick up a recipe...

Anyway, here they are in all their glory:

On to a winner here. I'd been searching for three weeks, but everywhere only had those tea candles with the dreadful aluminium cups, which dent and scratch even when you look at them.

Since some of the designs I want to make will partially show the sides, I was looking for a version with a white or transparent cup.

Finally found them at a supermarket that is stocking up for Christmas. Now on with the designs...

I love Rollin my own sushi! U have given me a great idea....I need to make a sushi platter. This white dish just doesnt do it justice. Thanks, John!

My pleasure. I'm glad (and amazed) that you found an idea amongst my stuff. My fee for reusing the design will be ... the recipe for those sushi - they look delicious.

Here then are the next four designs. I've applied BLO, but thought I'd better photograph them now, after my recent disaster with the finish :blink: ...

5. "Light ship" - space age version of one of these

6. "Zero percent" - electrons used  . A combination of the % sign and the number zero - the old dot matrix printer style with the dot in the middle

7 "R3" - rectangle, rhomboid and radius

Out of space, so number 8 is in the next post...

i think you should make some of these into dog food bowls serously some of these pet owners are kinda crazy about the lengths they go to for their dogs. they are far more extream towards dogs then their own kids. maybe you can sell them for that purpose.

Interesting idea. Though dogs are not always appreciative of such things - they tend to chew on them!

like all the new designs, but voting again for cantilever. i'm going to give something like that a try. very simple and well executed. congrats.

Believe me, it's a lot of fun, and you get to use up all those small scraps that you keep 'just in case'. The only thing necessary are the holes for the tea candles - plenty of scope there for unusual ideas.

Everybody likes the cantilever. I think they're all cool, but I'll vote for the "Wedge" and the "Balance Beam" as my favorite.

Nice work, John

Thanks, Chet. I agree, Cantilever is possibly the least abstract, but Wedge has a 'what the ... ?' effect on the sides while keeping a clean top, and Balancing Beam has some figure on one side which holes on the face would have lost - plus it works nicely, not wobbly and the candles don't fall out!

Very nice work John, both in creativity and the execution of the idea. I like the pattern of the pith in the end grain in DSCF0999.JPG. I can’t wait to see your first dining room table and matching chairs. ;)

The wood (pith and all) came from the rails of a bed someone threw away - and which someone else took home! I can't imagine I'm the only one with a saw in the boot, just in case... Plus at just around 10" in length, I think you can throw the normal rules of types of wood, board cuts, and what parts to use out the window - Diesis is end grain glued, but I couldn't break the joint with my hands.

Wouldn't do that with a table or chair though ...

Got to tell you I'm in love with those Iwasaki carving files that Hobomonk pointed out some time ago - they make the end grain shine better than a block plane. Put tape on your thumbs if you want to keep your fingerprints though, they're really sharp.

John,

the sushi recipe is as follows..... prepare sushi rice (short grain sticky rice) and be sure to season with rice vinegar and a bit of salt to taste. spread the rice onto a sheet of nori as thin (dried and baked seaweed) as evenly as you can (this takes some practice, but since you get to eat your mistakes it's no big deal). now, take some thinly sliced raw salmon or smoked salmon and lay it across the non-rice side of the nori sheet. next, lay some thin slices of cucumber next to the salmon. finally, mill some cream cheese down to 5mm x 5mm planks. the length will be dictated by the width of your sheet of nori. i recommend using your jointer, planer, tablesaw, or sushi knife for this task. now, just roll it up nice and tight (a bamboo rolling mat is the tool for the job here), then slice into approximately 8 pieces. soy sauce and wasabi paste are highly recommended accompaniments. if you'd like the spicy tuna recipe, let me know and i will post it as well.

Thanks for the recipe Nick - consider the design paid for ;) . Don't have a jointer or planer, but I bet a #4 and #7 will make mince meat of that cheese. Spicy tuna recipe? Why not! Good luck with the sushi dish.

After my early mishap with the shellac, I'm pleased to say that today I smoothed everything down with four aught wool and then put the final couple of coats on. I'll leave things for a few days before adding the wrapping paper.

Here then is the final photo, I lit the candles for you all (and as a final test, got to be sure it actually works, y'know), hope you all have a luminous holiday period :)
