I just finished these stools and I am quite proud of how they came out. Thanks Robert Lang for a fantastic project and article. Since these are "Chinese" I decided to do a "Yin Yang" thing with opposing wood species - Walnut and Maple. Finish is a couple coats of BLO/Tung Oil mix for a little color and grain enhancement and 5 coats of Arm-R-Seal satin. Really happy with the results!
