tdale51@yahoo.com
I'm designing a jewelry box for a friend's mother. I've attached a sketchup of it. It's Greene & Green inspired. My question for y'all is; How would you attach a back? I'm thinking about just rabetting in a panel. Any ideas? Oh yea the woods will be walnut and birds eye maple.jewelry box design.skp
Ken Oliver
Do you have another file you can attach? My computer doesn't recognize .skp.
splinna
The easiest thing would probably just route in rabbet all the way around to accept a small plywood panel - since its not really visible - and stain it a dark brown to match the color of your walnut. That's what I would do. If visibility is a concern, you could make a built up panel with rails and stiles to match your door on the front - I would make it a single panel with a third stile in the middle so it would balance with the look from the front. That would be my second choice. Lastly you could could make make up a similar panel, but instead of a solid insert the frame, use individual boards that have been shipplapped and all float together.... In all those scenarios, you would be putting a panel into a rabbet. That should give you something to think about...
